第一个是:High and dry. 这就是high and dry。 1: Everybody had fun at Sally's party. But when it came time to clean up the mess, all the guests left in a hurry and Sally was left high and dry, to do all the work by herself. 2: John, Jack and Mary all urged me to give a big party to celebrate my promotion. They promised to help out with the preparation. But so far they've done nothing saying they are too busy. It seems that I've been left high and dry and have to do all the work by myself. 3: Oh, why don't you dry up. I'm sick and tired of hearing you complain all the time! If you don't like the job, why don't you go out and look for another one. It's not that you don't have a choice. 4: After he lost the election Senator Blank had two months left in his term. But he saw his political power dry up over night as people know very well that he'll be out of the picture soon. 今天我们要学两个常用语:the cat is out of the bag和kick the bucket.LL: Hi Li Hua, hows it going?LH: 挺好的,总算又考完了一门。你怎么样?LL: Im doing pretty well. I cant believe she let the cat out of the bag!LH: LL: I see that now.LH: LL: I guess Susie is not a good candidate for being a spy.LH: 她要当间谍,第一天就把自己先出卖了!LL: Oh well, so the cat is out of the bag, I want to take you on a vacation.LH: 好啊!带我去渡假我当然愿意,可总得有点儿理由吧?LL: Well, that project just finished and my boss offered me a few weeks off to relax since we all worked so many hours on it. Plus I just got a bonus for the work.LH: LL: Its pretty good. Im just glad that now I have some time to relax.LH: 那你有没有想好去哪里呢?LL: I was thinking that we could go down to Miami, you know, just relax by the beach. I think it would be a pretty good way to get away from it all for a little bit.LH: 迈阿密的阳光,我来了!LL: Its a shame you werent surprised though, now I know not to tell someone who might let the cat out of the bag next time. LH: Larry, 你怎么了,脸色这么难看,发生什么事情了吗?LL: My second grade teacher apparently just kicked the bucket.LH: 你小学二年级老师kicked the bucket? 她的脚没受伤吧?LL: No, kicked the bucket means she died.LH: 哦,原来kick the bucket是去世的意思。对不起,你一定很难过吧?LL: Well, She always had some health problems. To be honest, Im surprised she lived to be as old as she did. She was probably in her 60s when I had her.LH: LL: Yeah, it is a little sad, and a little strange. I hadnt thought of her in years.LH: 那你是怎么听说她去世的消息呢?LL: Someone from my hometown posted it on my facebook wall.LH: 没想到,脸谱网还能起到发讣告的作用。LL: Yeah, it is kind of weird that someone would use facebook as an obituary. Usually people like to write about having kids online. But this is the first time I heard about someone kicking the bucket.LH: Anything in particular?LH: LL: I guess Id like to see a comedy or something light.LH: So you dont think about your teacher having kicked the bucket?LL: Well I guess, but also just because I feel like seeing a comedy.LH: 对了,Larry, 要不要听个小秘密?LL: A secret? Of course.LH: Jenny和Mark订婚了。LL: WOW! Thats great news!LH: You have to promise you wont let the cat out of the bag! 一个是the cat is out of the bag,意思是泄露秘密。 /201201/167450

Zhao: in China at least, coffee is often associated with an exotic, well-to-do bourgeois lifestyle. Coffee is often considered a hobby of the well-educated, middle-class people.Tony: maybe that's why some young chaps often spend a whole afternoon in a coffee bar, surfing the net or just typewriting something with laptop. While they are savoring a coffee at a leisured pace, they are actually showing off!Z: yes. Behind a lifestyle, there is a culture. Young people easily become blind worshippers of a Westernized life. While they may not really life coffee, they think it desirable and enviable to be lavish with money in those high-consumption places.T: then what about tea? We need to bear in mind in the first place that tea, rather than coffee, jas been the most popular drink for the Chinese people.Z: well. Tea reprements another facet of popular culture. While a coffee bar is usually quiet and resonates with soft, elegant music, a teahouse is often a noisy, crowded, public space. People visit teahouses to associate with others, playing chess, chatting, or simply listening to operas.T: what a pity that the traditional teahouses, as depicted Lao She, keep fading away so quickly in this metroplis. It is not easy to find an old-fashioned teahouse that suits the ordinary people's spending powerm either. Teahouses of today all feature a cozy, comfortable environment, and high-quality services, but can easily cost you a good deal—just like a coffee bar.Z: well, that's true. In a sense, it is not so much what you drink that really counts, as where and how you drink. /12/92946

To chicken out也可以说是临阵退却。 这就是to chicken out。 例句-1: " Today I was sure I could work up my courage and dive off the ten-meter board at the pool. I walked right out to the edge, but then I chickened out -- it looked like a long way down to the water!" 例句-2: " My friend Joe was planning to get married for the fourth time. But at the last moment he chickened out because his first three marriages ended in divorce and he was afraid to take another chance." 例句-3: "I turned down the job at the hamburger restaurant. They only pay chicken feed -- not even enough money to pay my rent." 他说:例句-4: "My grandfather says that 50 years ago a salary of ,000 a year meant you could live very comfortably. But these days ,000 is just chicken feed; you'd have a tough time just surviving on it." /200711/20964
